Arrival of the Spanish in Tumbez (page 46)
This story, repeated on page 375 is allegorical. The discoverers Columbus, Vasco Nunez de Balboa and Juan Diaz de Solis, explorer of the Yucatan and Brazilian coasts, are along side the explorers of Peru. Despite being mistaken by the exact dates, Guaman Poma has not mistaken the chronology of these events; finds the discovery of the New World by Columbus in the year 1493, in the Pacific by Balboa in 1512 and the River of Silver by Diaz de Solis in 1513 (p 370, 374). That is why we interpret this drawing as an allegory: All of the expectations formed a single phenomenon; the voyage of Columbus was the navigation that brought Europe to America.
So Columbus's voyage was the start of why the Spanish came to the indies?
ReplyDeleteI am just as confused as you are by this passage/short story. I read the stories before and after this one and haven't quite understood this. Columbus didn't initially 'discover' America but he did take part in bringing the Spanish to the Indies as told by Guaman Poma.
Deletethank you this is some good historical information, explaining Columbus's role in discovering america.
ReplyDeleteWas Guaman Poma blaming these explorers for what happened to the Indians?
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily. He is describing the order in which these events happened. I have a feeling he might blame the explorers in further chapters though.
DeleteColombus opened the floodgates for explorers to flock to the New World and it is unfortunate because it was a total miscalculation. I don't think it is fair to blame him for the downfall of the Inca because after all, the King calls the shots, and it was up to him whether people went or not.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I did not understand any word you say, you confuse
ReplyDeleteWhat drawing are you talking about? Where's the drawing?
